The Institute of Advanced Studies Kőszeg

A transdisciplinary research centre whose activities span the world of science from quantum physics to music and the arts; furthermore a space for innovation and integrative development initiatives in both theoretical science and the practical world of policy. The Institute is active in addressing present European historical, social and political issues with special attention to Central and Eastern Europe as well as the Balkans and  a provider of policy recommendations for a wide range of public stakeholders. The Centre is  a home to relevant and cutting-edge research through the interaction between senior and early-career researchers;  a venue for conferences, seminars, workshops and other fora each year, mostly open to the general public, in person and online. The Institute is the host and organizer of the annual International Summer University and the UNESCO MOST Winter School. One of the main aims is to be a catalyst in promoting regional cooperation in Hungary between universities, research centres, and local governments. The Institute is  a member of a growing international network of knowledge centres. The other important goal is to be a promoter of excellence in research, training, and strategic thinking through its international research and scholarship programmes and to publish on a variety of themes – the results of its intellectual achievements.

Bridging Disciplines to Address Global Challenges

The UNESCO MOST Winter School, organized by iASK, University of Pannonia, and the UNESCO Chair for Cultural Heritage Management and Sustainability Kőszeg, is a dynamic platform for MA and PhD students, as well as early-career researchers, to engage in an interdisciplinary dialogue with renowned scholars, senior researchers, and professionals from around the globe. This prestigious educational event addresses pressing global problems, including climate change, environmental threats, technological advancements, geopolitical shifts, security challenges, human security, migrations, and the preservation of cultural heritage in times of uncertainty. Through a series of stimulating lectures, interactive workshops, and thought-provoking discussions, participants deepen their understanding, exchange ideas, and foster innovative thinking. The UNESCO MOST Winter School is a vibrant community committed to tackling the most urgent challenges of our time while fostering sustainable solutions.

UNESCO Chair in Cultural Heritage Management and Sustainability: Fostering Innovation and Sustainable Preservation Practices

The UNESCO Chair in Cultural Heritage Management and Sustainability at the Institute of Advanced Studies Kőszeg (iASK) was established in 2011 and integrated into iASK in 2017. The Chair serves as a regional hub for advancing cultural heritage preservation practices and developing innovative research and study programs. Led by Professor Dr. Ferenc Miszlivetz, the UNESCO Chair for Cultural Heritage Management and Sustainability promotes UNESCO’s values. The goal of the UNESCO Chair is to advance cultural heritage management practices, ensuring the redevelopment, safeguarding, and utilization of cultural heritage sites while promoting their socio-economic benefits and community engagement.

Through research and collaboration, active contributions to the development of best practices in cultural heritage management are promoted. The commitment to interdisciplinary approaches and international dialogue is reflected in organized events, including the UNESCO MOST Winter School, International Summer University, and European Blue Sky Conference.
